Traffic Monitoring Using IoT

Due to the increase in population, the area inherited by humans is also increasing which requires the urbanization of roads. Thus, increasing the number of vehicles. With the increase in vehicles, traffic surveillance has become a necessity for improving road facilities rather than building new roads or increasing road capacities or to prevent any mischievous activity that could harm our society.

Traffic Monitoring Using IoT can be achieve easily. The IoT is a network of interconnected physical objects that can be control from different locations for the purpose of data transmission or to perform some task.

What is Traffic Surveillance?

Traffic Surveillance refers to monitoring the day to day ongoing road activities to provide better road facilities. It utilizes information gathered from different areas to prevent certain scenarios. however, approve legally in many countries. Although, strict guidelines have provide to prevent the threat to the privacy of the individuals. Some benefits of Traffic surveillance are:

  1. Reduces accidents on roads.
  2. It helps in better functioning of traffic lights at intersections. Thus, reducing traffic congestion.
  3. Reduce the waiting time and fuel consumption.
  4. Helps in maintaining law and order on streets.

Role of IoT in Traffic Surveillance

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of web-enabled devices capable of sending, receiving, and acting on the data they acquire from the physical world using sensors, processors and other hardware devices of the embedded systems. These devices are even capable of taking minute decisions from the collected data without human assistance.

therefore, Develop countries are implementing IoT in their cities to minimize traffic-related issues. The existing system requires more manpower, it can not detect traffic congestion, and it can not be remotely controlled. All these disadvantages are apply by IoT based traffic monitoring systems.

Architecture of Traffic Monitoring Using IoT

This project consists of LEDs which are in as as Traffic lights, and ultrasonic sensors are in use to detect the number of cars in each lane. Both the blocks are connect with a processor where all the computation is ready. The processor will control the traffic lights based on the data received from the sensor and manages the light by switching them between red, yellow and green. There are a number of sensors place at a distance in a single lane (say 100 meters).

however, The processor computes the number of cars in a lane of the intersection by monitoring based on distances measured and the duration between those measurements. The processor sends the data (number of cars) to the local server after a fixed duration. Similarly, the local server collects the data from all the intersections. Then the server exchanges the data with the cloud-based station in order to predict the duration of the high state of green light.

therefore, The predicted duration is the duration require for the smooth flow of traffic. If the forecast duration matches with the actual duration of the green light then no changes are essential. otherwise the processor takes a decision to adjust the duration of green light accordingly.

Future Scope of Traffic Surveillance

According to a survey, almost 45% of deaths resulting from ambulances stuck at the traffic or due to ambulance collision with other vehicles during emergencies. These numbers are increasing day by day as more vehicles are inheriting the roads. They can reduce to much extent if a clearer and shorter path Supply to the ambulance during emergencies. Using IoT, we can easily detect the traffic-congested areas and come up with better directions for the ambulance to reach the destination faster. So, more lives can be free.

Summary

So, in this Traffic Surveillance tutorial, we went through the definition and benefits of Traffic Surveillance. We understood how IoT can be implemented in Traffic Surveillance and a project architect for the same. We also discussed the future scope of traffic surveillance and how it can aid ambulances in reaching their destination.

hence, As an IoT enthusiast, this project can open up many opportunities for you and give birth to a better solution for the well being of our society. Traffic Surveillance is controlling and monitoring the traffic to provide better facilities and prevent accidents on roads.

Hope the tutorial was helpful. If there is anything we missed out on, do let us know in the comments section.
