Introduction
The Internet of Things has been an influencing factor in various industries and it will be wrong to deny that IoT in Smart Cities is changing the world rapidly. The term IoT was invented in 1999 and has come a long way since then. Today IoT has become the backbone of a large number of Industries and also has become the solution for the concept of Smart Cities.
IoT is already involve in smart homes where homes are fill up with devices that can communicate with the people living in the home. After the successful use of IoT in smart homes, it is not restricted to smart homes only, but now are entering in the smart cities as well where each and everything in the city will be controlled using IoT. This proves that IoT in Smart Cities is full of scopes and capabilities.
A smart city is defined as the city which involves a large amount of digitalised technology. This technology helps in improving the life of citizens, helps in regulating the infrastructure of the city and to manage the environment also. Smart cities collect data from the sensors and IoT devices which are connects throughout the city. These devices process this data which are then use to resolve issues if there are any by the government.
Benefits of IoT in Smart Cities
Smart Cities are quite beneficial because they will help in the economic development of the city. Smart Cities will also help in improving the infrastructure, environment and transportation as well. Benefits of Smart Cities are:
- Smart cities will be full of IoT devices. Hence decision making for the betterment of the city will be based on data that the devices will gather. These data-driven decisions will be highly effective.
- Transportation will be improved and will have a higher efficiency.
- Smart cities will help in improving the infrastructure of the city by minimizing the infrastructure failure of the city.
- Smart cities will also provide new economic development opportunities.
- Employment opportunities will also increase under smart cities since in order to make a smart city efficient, a highly effective workforce is also required.
- Smart cities will also increase digital equality, where everyone will have access to high speed internet services at an affordable price.
Influence of IoT in smart cities
There are a large number of sensors active in a city. But once these sensors are all combined together, their potential increases and the city converts into a smart city. Here are some examples that how IoT in Smart Cities technology can be use:
1. Smart Infrastructure:
In smart infrastructure, sensors can be used to detect whether there is any flaw in buildings, bridges, etc. This will give us an edge in case of emergencies where immediate evacuation is necessary. Smart Infrastructure allows includes:
- Smart Lighting: This feature of smart infrastructure will help in tracking the usage of electricity and will also help in preventing its wastage ensuring efficient utilization of electricity.
- Connecting of Streets: Smart cities will help in the collection and delivering of the information regarding the traffic density and roadblocks as well.
- Smart Parking System: Smart Parking will be quite helpful in places like malls, hospitals and airports where sensors connected in the parking system will be able to deliver the information regarding the available parking space.
- In Smart Infrastructure, sensors can be used in bridges to sense their degradation. It will also help in sensing the seismic forces in case of earthquakes and will also help in sensing the wear and tear of the roads.
2. Smart Buildings:
Smart buildings primarily involve the safety and security of the buildings from intruders. This involves:-
- Security Systems: In order to detect any unauthorized access in the premises, security systems should be implemented in the form of biometrics, facial recognition and security cameras.
- Smart Cooling/Heating and Ventilation: This helps in monitoring various parameters like humidity, temperature and pressure and also ensures proper ventilation in the buildings.
3. Smart Industrial Environment:
Industrial Environment uses IoT in Smart Cities in the following areas:
- To detect forest fires.
- thus, To detect Noise and Air Pollution
- To detect Radiation levels
- also To detect earthquakes early
- To detect explosive and hazardous gases
- however, To detect the leakage of colourless and odourless gases
4. Smart Water Management:
IoT will help the water industry in the following ways:
- Quality checking of the water
- Checking the level of water in case of River floods
- Checking the pollution levels in the sea
- Controlling the conditions of the swimming pool remotely
This blog listed some important benefits of IoT in smart cities, but in reality there is no end to these benefits. The possibilities of using IoT in smart cities is endless and unlimited. It’s true that the concept of smart cities is not universally adopted yet, but it will be when the benefits of smart cities will be better understood.
conclusion
Smart cities will definitely help in transforming the lives of the people. It will help in improving the infrastructure of the city, environmental development and the way the city will be operated. The best part in forming smart cities is that every city can become smart. The size of the city is not a barrier in making the city “smart”. It is quite safe to assume that IoT in Smart Cities will be able to provide a great impact in the development of smart cities in the future.
